    This UNDP report presents the social and environmental impacts of global health procurement stressing that the health sector alongside electronics, apparel, agriculture and infrastructure has a human rights ‘high risk’ particularly to decent work and women’s rights because of its nature, geographical location of production and lack of transparency in supply chains

  • Risk-assessments for products within five categories: Medical Supplies. 2017

    Swedwatch has carried out risk-assessments on thirty-four products within five product categories on behalf of Direktoratet for forvaltning og IKT (DIFI). The risk-assessment reports aim to provide information on potential adverse impacts on labour rights and human rights in the supply chains of the selected products. The reports will guide contracting authorities on the importance of social considerations in their purchasing practices and when such criteria should be applied. The risk- assessments will also improve the readers’ understanding of what to look for when monitoring supplier compliance.

    The British Medical Association suggests through this report that those who use, procure, supply, or manufacture medical gloves instigate policies and practices to protect workers in this industry, and suggests ways that this may be realised, and challenges that may be encountered.

  • Healthier Procurement: Improvements to Working Conditions for Surgical Instrument Manufacture in Pakistan. 2015

    In this report, Swedwatch Iinvestigated the production conditions for surgical instruments procured by the Swedish regions for the public healthcare service. This report is a follow up on a Swedwatch-report from 2007, which revealed severe labour rights violations. The prohibition of child labour is now strictly enforced, wages are paid in accordance with the minimum wage, and employees are not forced to work overtime. The report also identifies and evaluates the models used to set social criteria in order not to only award contracts based on price, but give suppliers committed to ethical trade a competitive advantage.

  • Ethical Procurement for General Practitioners and Clinical Commissioning Groups: Ensuring the protection of labour rights in medical supply chains. 2014

    British Medical Association provides recommendations on what can clinical commissioning groups do to support ethical procurement in the NHS in the UK and the benefits that such actions entail.
